Coconut Water 101: For those of you who haven’t heard…..

If you know me, you’ve probably received the COCONUT WATER TALK.

Coconut water is the endosperm inside of fresh young green coconuts. Not the well known matured brown coconuts.

So, why should you try this beverage?

*Very high source of POTASSIUM–the most per serving, even better than bananas or sports drinks like Gatorade.
**Low in calories, light and refreshing. Only 60 calories per serving.
**Studies have shown that it is an isotonic beverage…
Coconut Water has the same electrolytic balance as human blood: It’s Isotonic!
    interesting….
**Coconut Water has a very high level of Manganese which is essential for bone growth and the body’s development; 2-5mg a day is required for good health. Manganese supplements are used to treat Osteoporosis.
**Tastes delicious. Savory. “Like chips!” one of my close friends said…Coconut Water is not coconut milk. It is not white or super sweet and does not contain any fat–this is not coconut oil.
**CW shares the same electrolytic balance as human blood, and during World War II when IV solutions were scarce, CW was used as an IV drip for patients in hospitals and clinics.
Overall, I am addicted to Coconut Water.

Anonymous,Honestly, VitaCoCo is my least fave brand. I LOVE ONE and ZICO. Plus, you MUST drink coconut water ice cold, unless if it super fresh straight-from-the-coconut coco water. It just tastes better really cold. So TRY AGAIN! for me. 🙂 Try ZICO in the orange passion flavor (pink top) or ONE in its traditional flavor. These are both my faves.Kathy

Silly question, but does Coconut Water act as a diuretic? I am worried because I already have digestive issues … I really want to try it though!

Do you mix it with anything? I tried both the VIta Coco original and pineapple versions and they were beyond disgusting. The pineapple was definitely the better of the two. My dislike of this really surprised me because I&#39m an extremely healthy eater that&#39s quick to enjoy new healthy foods. But this…ulch, it was like something plastic with a funky aftertaste. I have half a container of the original flavored one left that I&#39m trying to figure out how to mask.

Anonymous,The NorthWestern School of nutrition notes that:”No reported cases of manganese Toxicity resulting from dietary intake have been reported. “Manganese is a mineral, and it takes a while for minerals to build up in your body. The school also notes:”The upper limit of safety for manganese established by the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine is approximately 11 mg daily for adults.”There is .3 mg of manganese in each cup of coconut water. Thus you would have to drink 36 cups to reach this limit. Please take these facts into consideration. Also factor in any mineral supplements you may be taking. And I’m sure ZICO or Vita Coco would love to answer your question concerns as well. I may write them to and post their response later. Thanks for the great question–happy coconut water drinking!Kathylink to data: http://www.feinberg.northwestern.edu/nutrition/factsheets/manganese.html

Ashlee, I love that you are an auto reload subscriber! Have you tried the straight from the coconut ‘coconut water’ too? It’s always a treat to get CW extra fresh. I LOVE O.N.E brand, but once in a while i like to crack open my own white flesh coconut and drink it super fresh. Natural stores usually carry coconuts too! And it can be the same price as a tetrapak. You just need a big knife and a steady hand to poke a hole in it…and Hehe on the endosperm word.Kathy

Hey, what happens if you like drink 3-4 or maybe 5 coconut water drinks per day.. I’ve just noticed how much manganese is in it (checking the vita coco pack) and I’ve already had 3 today! Does that mean I can only have 2 per day!? (because recommended intake of manganese is about 4mg)

I love Vita Coco! It is def my favorite and the best coconut water out there! I think it's not too sweet and just the right thickness, definitely beats Zico and O.N.E for taste.
