vegan peanut butter cups for halloween candy

Let's make vegan peanut butter cups for this halloween month!... I've been making peanut butter cups for forever. So here's a story around them..

"MOM", I WANT A TREAT..."

I used to say that my daughter hated Halloween candy.

Not because she hated Halloween. Quite the opposite. For the past few years, we’d have hordes of trick-or-treaters coming to our door, and her absolute favorite thing was answering it.

The doorbell would ring, she’d race over, and then instead of politely handing out a piece or two, she’d plop a giant handful of candy into someone’s bag. I’d watch the kid’s eyes get huge like, Oh my god, this little girl just gave me half the bowl. Then she’d happily wave them goodbye and wait for the doorbell to ring again.

That was her Halloween.

Sure, she’d go trick-or-treating too. She’d come home with a big bag of candy, have one enthusiastic session of opening things and taking a few bites… and then basically never touch it again.

I never understood it.

I have no idea what’s going to happen this year. She’s six now, and I have a feeling this may be the year she realizes, Wait. This giant bag of candy is MINE?

But tonight, a few weeks before Halloween, her sweet tooth was in full effect.

“I want a dessert,” she announced.

Unfortunately, our kitchen was very much in a we need to go grocery shopping state. I looked around and didn’t have much going on.

LET'S MAKE CANDY

So I said, “You know what? Let’s make some candy.” We found chocolate. We found peanut butter. We found some Halloween sprinkles. And these little Vegan Halloween Peanut Butter Cups are what we made. Maybe she’ll become a Halloween-candy kid this year after all. Or maybe she’ll just keep giving it all away.

Either way, I’m keeping a few of these for myself.

Vegan Halloween Peanut Butter Cups – Easy Homemade Candy

Halloween candy, but make it homemade. These Vegan Halloween Peanut Butter Cups are rich, chocolatey, peanut buttery and ridiculously easy to make. Add a few Halloween sprinkles and suddenly your everyday peanut butter cup is ready for October.

I’ve been making homemade nut butter cups forever, and they’re still one of those treats that somehow look like you did much more work than you actually did.

Melt. Layer. Chill. Eat. That’s basically the whole situation.

These are perfect for Halloween parties, movie nights, after-school treats or just keeping a little stash in the fridge because it’s October and there should probably be chocolate involved.

And yes, they’re completely vegan.

Pretzel-Stuffed Peanut Butter Cups

Vegan Halloween Peanut Butter Cups

There’s something especially fun about making your own Halloween candy. You get all the chocolate-peanut-butter goodness of a classic peanut butter cup, but you can use your favorite vegan chocolate, make the peanut butter layer exactly how you like it and decorate the tops however you want.

I love keeping these pretty simple: glossy chocolate, creamy peanut butter and a few festive sprinkles on top.

They’re cute without requiring an entire afternoon of Halloween crafting in the kitchen.

Halloween Peanut Butter Cup Ideas

The basic chocolate + peanut butter combination is already pretty perfect, but Halloween gives us permission to make things slightly ridiculous.

Try topping your cups with:

  • Orange, black or purple Halloween sprinkles
  • Flaky sea salt
  • Crushed vegan cookies
  • Mini vegan chocolate chips
  • Candy eyes
  • A drizzle of melted vegan white chocolate
  • Chopped peanuts
  • Halloween candies

You can also swap the peanut butter for almond butter, cashew butter or sunflower seed butter.

Mini or Full-Size Peanut Butter Cups?

Both! Use mini muffin liners if you want little bite-size Halloween candies that are easy to put out at a party.

Regular muffin liners make a much more substantial peanut butter cup — which I fully support. You can also play around with the ratio of chocolate to peanut butter. Add a thin peanut butter center if you’re a chocolate person, or make that middle layer extra thick if peanut butter is the whole reason you’re here.

A Few Tips

Make sure the first chocolate layer has a chance to set before adding your peanut butter filling. This helps create those pretty, distinct layers.

If your peanut butter is especially runny, chilling it briefly can make the cups easier to assemble.

And add your Halloween toppings while the final chocolate layer is still soft so everything sticks.

Then pop the cups into the fridge or freezer until completely firm.

Make Them Ahead

These are a great make-ahead Halloween treat because they actually want to hang out in the fridge.

Make a batch ahead of a party, store them chilled and pull them out when you’re ready to serve.

I also love them straight from the fridge when the chocolate has that perfect little snap.

Vegan Halloween Peanut Butter Cups

Chocolate. Peanut butter. Halloween sprinkles.

Sometimes we really don’t need to make things more complicated than they need to be.

These easy homemade peanut butter cups are festive, completely vegan and very fun to have waiting in the fridge all October long.
